You can enable the use of the glMessenger smilies functions in the forum with a setting in the public_html/forum/include/config.php

$useMessengerSmilies = true;

Regarding your other question: I'm basically saying that there will need to be some edits in admin/story.php if you want the smilies enabled when previewing stories that your creating or editing as a story editor. Any stories created and use emoticons will be translated when viewed - thats not an issue.

This is probably already documented but I haven't had the time to look!

Do new smilies have to be in a specfic file format? I see both jpg and gif files, do these need to be 8-bit or anything?

Cos out of curiosity I uploaded a jpg and it wasn't showing in the list of avaiable images in the smilie admin.

There should be no limitations. Assuming the smilie is placed in the public_html/images/smilie folder.

Just an update for GL 1.3.11.

/path/to/geeklog/system/lib-story.php, lines 180-183:

PHP Formatted Code

$A['bodytext'] = str_replace( '$', '$', $A['bodytext'] );
$A['introtext'] = msg_replaceEmoticons($A['introtext']);
$A['bodytext'] = msg_replaceEmoticons($A['bodytext']);

/path/to/geeklog/public_html/lib-common.php, lines 2962 and 2963:
PHP Formatted Code

$A['comment'] = str_replace( '}', '}', $A['comment'] );
$A['comment'] = msg_replaceEmoticons($A['comment']);

Seems to work ok...
